It wasn’t broken
The sections worked fine. Nobody used them. That’s a harder brief than fixing something broken, because there’s nothing to fix. The job was to design an internal tool people would open without being told to.
Design system in the wrong file format
Italgas had a carefully thought-out design system. It lived in Sketch, and the deliverable had to be in Figma.
So I studied it closely first. I didn’t want to copy every component. I wanted to learn its logic so I could build the missing pieces by hand. Otherwise I’d have delivered something that looks like Italgas but doesn’t behave like it.
Wireframes after the system, not before
That order looks backwards. It worked because the system already defined spacing, hierarchy and how components behave, so the wireframes didn’t have to decide those things again.
Arguing for fewer variants
About 10% of what I needed didn’t exist yet, like larger tabs, a new size step and the main cards. I discussed each one with Italgas’s internal Design Lead, and it always came down to the same question: how do we add this without adding a variant?
We disagreed often, and it was useful. A new size in a design system affects everything that uses it. Some of what I proposed became part of the system and is now used beyond this project.
Where it stands
It’s live across the company. Italgas maintains it internally, on a design system that now includes components I designed.
