Working on myMarina taught me a lot and shaped how I’ve approached every project since.
Today many Italian marinas use myMarina, and boaters use it to book a mooring or extra services.
Process
The client, now a good friend, came to me with the idea for the app. He already had developers but no designer. Looking back, it was a lot for a single junior designer to take on, and I learned a huge amount from it.
The project included several platforms for management and online booking, but the app was the starting point. The hardest part was that the project kept evolving during our calls, and many parts of the original requirements document changed along the way.
We worked on it day and night during COVID-19, aligning on ideas and testing different options and configurations until we had fairly solid wireframes.
I had already made UI kits at the company I worked for, but myMarina was the first time I had the freedom to build a solid, well-defined design system.
It made working with the developers much easier, because everything was ready for them to build.
When the app was finished, almost a year later, we moved on to everything around it: the branding, an online widget to embed on marina websites, the CMS for marinas, and a full set of advertising, email and communication materials.
Working on this project was as exhausting as it was thrilling.
